May blog written by Mary Rano
Mother’s Day is celebrated in some form all around the world. Our Canadian neighbors will also celebrate Mother’s day on May 11th (the library will be closed). The holiday as we know it was established in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation setting aside the 2nd Sunday in May as a national observance of mothers. The idea was to fly the American flag “as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”
While there is some debate as to who actually started the holiday, the origins have been attributed to Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, who held a memorial service in honor of her deceased mother at her mothers church in Grafton, West Virginia on May 12, 1907, the second Sunday in May. She filled the church with white carnations in honor of her Mother. It was a fairly common practice in the early 20th century to wear a carnation on Mother’s day. White if your mother was deceased and pink or red if she was living. I remember my own mother talking about the tradition.
So Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmas, aunts, godmothers, step-moms, your best friends mom and all the women that show up in our lives to love and mother us.
