June is one of those busy, busy months. It seems like there is no end to all the end of school year activities for kids, teens and college students. Whether it’s classroom parties, field days, moving up ceremonies, proms or graduations, June is busy!
(Personally, I somehow seemed to time it just right that my son is graduating high school and my daughter is graduating from college! Shout out to my stellar organizational skills! We are busy, busy this month!) But I digress!
June might be an ending for certain phases in your or your kids’ lives, but it can also be a beginning to a more laid back and relaxing time. This is the time to recharge those social, emotional and physical batteries! June is the gateway to summer!
Ahhhh, summer! What a time to slow down from frantic school and life schedules! Summer is a time to go on a vacation abroad or on a staycation close to home!! It’s a time to hit the pool or the beach, but more importantly, it’s a time to find a GOOD BOOK for yourself and for your kids to get lost in! You have the time now, so take advantage of it! This is where the Oceanside Library and THE SUMMER READING CLUB come in! (THE SUMMER READING CLUB DESERVES TO BE CAPITALIZED BECAUSE IT IS THAT SPECIAL! YES! YES IT IS!)
I have been in the library world for a long time, as a patron when I was a young girl (shout out to Williston Park and Shelter Rock Libraries!! WHOOT! WHOOT!) and now for years as a Youth Services Librarian. I have participated in many a SUMMER READING CLUB! The books! The book lists! The PRIZES! End of summer pizza parties! Ahh, the memories! THE SUMMER READING CLUB was always something to look forward to when the weather got warmer. If you will, a time honored tradition!
THE SUMMER READING CLUB is the chance for you and your whole family to read what you want to read, not what you are assigned to read from school or work. It’s a time to get lost in whatever book genre floats your boat or to try something different. Who knows! You may actually like that creepy mystery that you never thought you would read! This is the time to find out! Did I mention that there are PRIZES involved? Not only does it give you something to do with your kids during the summer, but it also secretly keeps their reading skills up, combatting the dreaded summer slide! Basically, THE SUMMER READING CLUB is a win win for you and your family!
THE SUMMER READING CLUB is so important here at the Oceanside Library that we don’t just have a club for children, we have SUMMER READING CLUBS for teens and adults as well! The adult SUMMER READING CLUB is Making Waves, the teen SUMMER READING CLUB is thinking outside the book with the Summer Review Crew and the Youth SUMMER READING CLUB is ready to Unearth A Story! Did I mention that there are PRIZES?!

I have always felt that the single most important skill that you could help your child achieve is learning to read. Reading will benefit them a thousand times over and it can all start with THE SUMMER READING CLUB!
Spend some quality time getting lost in a good book this summer either by yourself or with your kids! To quote part of Rosemary Wells’ book Read To Your Bunny, “Read to your bunny often and your bunny will read to you!” Who knows, maybe you could get your kids to read to you their books! Reading is so, so, so important! So join us for another summer tradition and join one of the many SUMMER READING CLUBS that we offer at the OCEANSIDE LIBRARY!
