We never have enough shoes. Most people own at least 20 pairs of shoes and I bet many of us can top that. I know I can.
We have winter shoes, summer shoes, sneakers, sandals, high heels, low heels, and of course, shoes that we are never going to wear because while they are so beautiful, they are so very painful to wear.
Shoes have evolved from being something people needed to something people use as a status symbol. So, some fun facts about shoes.
- Fun Fact # 1: High heels were first worn by Persian soldiers to avoid falling off their horse when shooting a bow. The high heel kept them in the stirrup.
- Fun Fact # 2: King Louis wore high heels because he was short. It then became a style that men wore.
- Fun Fact # 3: Until the 1800’s there were no left and right shoes, just shoes that fit either foot. Sounds so easy to me.
- Fun Fact # 4: Running shoes have been around since the 1860s. Converse produced the All Star trainer in 1917 for basketball players. The style has changed very little over the years.
- Fun Fact # 5: Celine Dion has admitted to owning 10,000 pairs of shoes. That beats me.
- Fun Fact # 6: The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has a collection of around 2,000 pairs of shoes that span 3,000 years of history. I wish I knew that when I was in London.
And some “Not so Fun” Facts: Shoes have been used in memorials to commemorate events in history.
- Shoes on the Danube is a memorial to the Hungarian Jews murdered in 1944-1945.
- Three pairs of shoes are part of the 9/11 memorial.
- 7,000 pairs of shoes were place on the Capital lawn in 2018 to raise awareness of children killed by guns.
- If you are like me and love shoes you might want to read books about shoes or books that have shoes as part of their story.
