The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, manning a Food Bank table, and more.  Students may sign up at the Information Desk or by calling (516) 766-2360, option 4.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

Booker’s Birthday Celebration (Grades 7-12)
Saturday, October 21 // 11am – Noon
(WAIT LIST ONLY) OR 1-2pm (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Help our Children’s Room librarians as they celebrate Booker’s birthday with crafts, paintings, and mosaics.

Keva (Grades 9-12)
Teens will help young builders with Keva planks. 
Monday, October 23 // 4-6pm

Teens 'N' Tots Read Together - Halloween (Grades 6-12)
Come dressed in costume and share a scary story with a young friend.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG) Meetings (Grades 6-12)

Food Bank Collection (Grades 6-12)
Help collect food donations for Cory Cares.

Keva (Grades 9-12)
Teens will help young builders with Keva planks.

Online Program Registration Coming Soon!
Beginning in the near future, patrons will have the convenience of registering online for Children’s, Tween, and Young Adult programs through Oceanside Library’s website.  Please have an updated Oceanside Library card and current email address ready to use for online program registrations.

Chess Club (Grades 4-12)
Wednesdays // 4:30pm
Open chess program on Wednesdays. No prior knowledge of the game required.  Light refreshments will be served.

Self-Esteem For Girls (Grades 5-8) (IN SESSION)
Saturdays, October 21 & 28 // 10:30-11:30am

Join Girl Scout Skye Margies as she conducts this multi-session program on increasing self-esteem and confidence in girls.  Presented as part of her Gold Award project.


Sea Turtle Celebration
Saturday, October 21 // 2pm // No Registration Required

Have you ever wondered if there were sea turtles in New York waters?  Would you know what to do if you saw one on the beach?  Researchers from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation will teach you how you can help save these animals.  Once you attend this lecture, you can sign up to become a registered beach walker and help the Riverhead Foundation save cold stunned sea turtles!  Light refreshments will be served.

'Tween Program: Candy Apples (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Thursday, October 26 // 7-8pm

Dip your apple with candy, caramel or chocolate and decorate with crunches, sprinkles, and Heath bars.

Thank You Plaques For Our Veterans (Grades 6-12)
Thursday, November 2 // 7-8pm

Make a one-of-a-kind Thank You Plaque that will be donated to a veteran who has served our country. 

Build A Mosaic City (Grades 6-12)
Monday, November 6 // 7-8pm

Use mosaic pieces to craft your own city over a glass picture frame.  Paint, gems, and glue are mixed in for an even greater effect!

‘Tween Scene: Mason Jar Craft
Thursday, November 9 // 7-8pm

Be creative and decoupage a mason jar.

South African Malva Pudding (Grades 6-12)
Monday, November 13 // 7-8pm

Join us as we learn how to make a traditional South African pudding.  A B.O.B. program.

‘Tween Scene: Turkey Book Craft
Thursday, November 16 // 4:30-5:30pm

Make a turkey using a recycled book.

‘Tween Scene: Let’s Make Pumpkin Bread
Monday, November 20 // 7-8pm

Learn how to make pumpkin loaf from scratch.  Measure, mix, and bake for a delicious holiday specialty.

Financial Aid For College
Monday, November 27 // 7-8:30pm

Jan and Tony Esposito will teach you what you need to know to successfully navigate the road to higher education.  They will discuss the difference between the SAT and the ACT and share with you the proven techniques and strategies they have used to help hundreds of families send their children to the colleg of their choice without going broke. 

‘Tween Scene: Glitter Ring Dish
Monday, December 4 // 7-8pm

Decorate a glass dish with glitter and glue.  Makes a great gift for the holidays.

Special Needs Music For Everyone (Grades 4-High School) (Off-Site Program)
Thursday, December 7 // 7-8:30pm

Music For Everyone is a music performance and appreciation program focusing on all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds in a fun, hands on, and supportive environment.  Caregiver must be present.  Program will be held at RVC Music Academy, 202 Merrick Road, Rockville Centre.  516-442-5357.

‘Tween Scene: Cooked To Perfection (Off-Site Program)
Monday, December 11 // 5-6:30pm // Fee: $15

B.O.B. celebrations continue with our tweens creating a delicious 3-course South African meal from scratch.  Program will be held at Cooked To Perfection, 49 Main Street, East Rockaway.  516-812-6551.  A B.O.B. program. 

‘Tween Scene: Star Wars Science
Monday, December 18 // 7-8pm

Learn about the ways Star Wars uses simple science to make special effects, like galaxy slime seen in the films and make some to take home!

Sticker Art & Pizza (Grades 6-12)
Wednesday, December 27 // 1-3pm

Create a colorful collaboration, one sticker at a time.  Pizza and drinks will be served!

Friday, December 29 // 2:30-3:30pm

Listen closely, mark your card, get five in a row and call out Bingo!  Win your favorite candies!

If you are doing research for school reports, extra credit, or simply out of personal interest, the Library provides many useful databases that you can access from home as well as in the Library.  Go to our Research Databases page and select your topic of interest, ranging from history and current events to literature, science, health, art, music, biography, and practice tests.


GAME ON!!
Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7 day loan period.
