OCEANCON IS COMING!!
Saturday, October 20 // Noon – 4pm // ALL AGES
A day filled with comics, superheroes, and games for all ages!  Meet a panel of graphic novel authors and artists, dress up for our cosplay contest, take drawing classes in artist alley, and more!

Noon:
Superhero Scavenger Hunt (Ages 3-12 years)
Various superheroes are hidden around the Children’s Room.  Stop by the librarians’ desk in the Children’s Room to pick up the list and see if you can find them all.
Photobooth fun & Cosplay contest

12:30pm:
Decorate A Superhero Mask (Ages 3-12 years)
If you were a superhero, what would your mask look like?  Stop by the Children’s Room anytime between 12:30 and 1:30pm to create your superhero mask.  While supplies last.

1pm:
Panel: Graphic Novelists Kelly Gordon & Pat and Amy Shand

2pm:
Meet & Greet with panel authors/artists
Meet & Greet with Stormtroopers from the 501st Legion
Superhero Training Camp (Grades K-6)
Do you have what it takes to be a superhero?  Put yourself to the test at our training camp, complete all the challenges, and earn your superhero certificate.  Stop in the Children’s Room between 2 and 3pm to participate.
Retro Video Games: Marvel vs. Capcom, Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Jedi Outcast, Spider-Man 2, and more!

Artist Alley: Manga Drawing Class

3pm:
George Lucas and the Creation of Star Wars
Saturday, October 20 // 3pm
Featuring lots of exciting, rare footage, this program traces George Lucas’ surprising, inspiring life, and how he became the billionaire creator of the biggest science fiction saga ever. Designed for both casual and die-hard fans of all ages, this fast-paced, multimedia program explores Lucas’ inspirations for the original movie; follows the backstage drama behind all his films leading up to and including the original Star Wars; and shows clips from the many films that influenced Lucas.

Superhero Storytime (Ages 3-5 years) (Registration Required)

Join us for stories, songs, and a brief book-based movie.
 

The Library offers numerous opportunities for teens in Grades 6-12 to earn Community Service Credit such as: reading to young children, assisting adults with their computer or smart device questions, receiving donations at a Food Bank table, and more.  Here are the options currently available (space is limited):

You may register online, via phone, or in-person at the Information Desk.  Limit of two Community Service Opportunities per child.

Food Bank Collection (Grades 9-12)
Sunday, September 30 // Noon-2pm (WAIT LIST ONLY) OR 2-4pm
Sunday, October 14 // Noon-2pm  (WAIT LIST ONLY) OR 2-4pm

Help collect food donations for Cory Cares.

Teen Volunteer Table (Grades 6-12)

Hand out voter registration forms.

Keva (Grades 9-12)
Wednesday, October 3 // 5-7pm

Teens will help young builders with KEVA planks.

Pet Emergency Kits (Grades 6-12) (WAIT LIST ONLY)
Friday, October 12 // 4-5pm

We will create kits for donation to your local animal shelter in the event of an emergency.  The kit will be filled with most need items for cats and dogs.

OceanCon Volunteers (Grades 7-12)
Saturday, October 20 // 2-3pm

Teens will help out in the Superhero Training Camp.

Lego Club (Grades 9-12)
Tuesday, October 23 // 6-8pm

Teens will help young builders join the LEGO fun!

Teen Advisory Group (Grades 6-12)
Thursday, October 25 // 7-8pm

Come join our Teen Advisory Group (TAG) and be part of what happens in the Young Adult Department.  Refreshments will be served.

Halloween Teens N’ Tots (Grades 6-12)
Monday, October 29 // 7-8pm

Come dressed in costume and share a scary story with a young friend.

You may register online, via phone, or in-person.  Payment is due within 3 days of registering.  Pay at the Information Desk in person.  We accept cash (exact change if possible please!) or check made payable to Oceanside Library (unless otherwise noted).  Fees are non-refundable.  Participants in the same class require separate checks.

Taste Test Challenge
Saturday, September 29 // 2pm // No Fee // ALL AGES // Registration Required

Think you can tell the difference between different flavored Oreos?  How about Twizzlers?  Can you ID Coke vs. Pepsi?  Can you tell spices by smell?  Join us for this all-ages event where you will learn how products are made, how our sense of taste and smell work, and try your luck at our taste-test challenge stations!  All product info will be available soon for food allergy concerns. 
Open to the entire family! (You don't have to do each station)

Come learn how some of our favorite foods are made--and then take part in our Taste Test Challenge: Some stations will feature blind taste test; others will dare you to identify flavors, others will let you discover your favorites!

Video games for Wii, Wii U, XBOX360, XBOX One, and Playstation 4 are located in the Young Adult Department.  Oceanside School District residents (7th grade or older) may check out up to two titles at a time for a 7 day loan period.
